5 Secrets You Should Know When Thrift Shopping

Since Earth Day was this week I decided to do a post on tips for thrift shopping. Thrift shopping is a more eco-friendly and cheaper way to build your dream wardrobe. Although I would love to be an expert at this, there are not many thrift shops near me, so through research I have accumulated the top 5 tips when thrift shopping.

1. Have a Plan
Take a look at your closet and donate things that you don't really wear and trash the clothes that have stains, rips, holes, etc. After you emptied out your closet to the stuff that you truly like/love think about what you are missing, a nice trench coat? maybe denim shorts? When shopping keep theses pieces in mind so you don't go too crazy when you see the marked down prices.

2. Find Inspiration
Once you know what pieces you want to add into your life, go on websites to find the latest trends you personally like. What I do is even if I don't plan on buying anything from a website, I add my favorite clothing items to the cart and afterwards you will have a nice list of your favorite trends.

3. Have a Budget
When walking into a thrift store for the first time you may find the sudden urge to buy everything they have since it is so cheap. But you may be surprised how much everything can add up when you reach the register. In order to avoid filling your closet with more things you will never wear or that awkward moment when you realize you don't have enough money, set a limit on how much you want to spend.

4. How to Arrive
Believe it or not what you wear to go shopping is also important. If you don't want to have to wait to try on clothes in the dressing rooms where tighter tops to fit shirts and jackets over. If you are planning to buy jeans or shorts wear a skirt to easily slip it on, but if skirts is what you want wear tighter bottoms so that it can fit over your outfit. Also bring along a friend, it is more fun to shop with somebody and they can tell you if a piece looks good on you or not.

5.Close Inspection
After you have looked around, narrow down your items by only keeping pieces you will wear more than once. After you have found your pile of keepers look at every aspect of each article of clothing to make sure it is in great condition. Check for tears, pills, stains, loose threads, etc. on both the outside and inside. If it has hardware such as zippers and buttons make sure they are all working properly and don't need repairs.

I hope you find these tips helpful on your next thrifting adventure!
